Hillary the Witch goes to the Opera
Guest performance by Opernhaus Zürich
Hillary the witch enters a radio competition and wins two tickets for the opera. She is extremely pleased with her prize — until she realises that she has absolutely no idea what opera is.
“The Little Witch’s Dictionary” describes opera like this: “Opera is theatre, where people just sing.” There must be some kind of curse involved, thinks Hillary. Who in their right mind would sing if they didn’t have to? Naturally, she can’t resist immediately trying out the witch’s spell which she believes to be the singing curse. But clearly something goes wrong. Out of thin air appears Maria Bellacanta, a fully qualified witch and opera singer. With her help, Hillary not only discovers the world of opera; more importantly, she also learns that feelings can often be expressed more closely in music than by a tonne of words.
With excerpts from “Hansel and Gretel“, “The Magic Flute”, “Faust” (Gounod) and other works.
