This concert, titled “Opus 1 – ‘Einzigartig’” (“Opus 1 – ‘Unique’”), focuses on works which were either specifically composed for this evening’s artist, the celebrated pianist Maki Namekawa, or which she was first to perform. Alban Berg’s Opus 1 piano sonata is featured alongside these works, and serves as a point of reference for the other compositions. Two of the pieces on this evening’s programme have not previously been performed in Vienna.

Beethoven’s Op. 11 trio was originally written for clarinet, cello and piano; but, to ensure its popularity with amateur players, he also arranged a version in which violin replaced clarinet. It was a big hit in its day, a true “Gassenhauer”, not least because, in its final movement, Beethoven employed multiple variations of a theme by Joseph Weigl which was already extremely popular. Neither of the two other works on this evening’s programme are a Gassenhauer – or at least, not yet. But both pieces contain wonderful music and are well worth discovering. We hear the piano trio by Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979), a British viola player and composer, who is as yet very little known in these parts.  A romantic retrospective in D minor by Anton Arensky (1861-1906) brings the evening to a close.

Led by their choirmaster, 24 boys in sailor suits sing in concert. Why are they known and loved by people all over the world? Because they remind us that music is the universal language of human emotion, a language which knows no national boundaries. Over the course of eleven Fridays, the world-famous Vienna Boys Choir show off their talents. With youthful energy and charm, they lead their audience on a journey through musical history, taking in not just Mozart, Schubert and Strauss, but World Music and Pop as well. And along the way we’ll no doubt hear a few stories from their history, which stretches back over more than 525 years!

The play “The White Disease” is one of the most important works by the writer and playwright Karel Čapek. He wrote it on the eve of the Second World War to warn of the rise of National Socialism and the conflict between democracy and the interests of power-hungry dictators. For Čapek, the most significant threat to society stemmed from fanaticism, blind obedience, and unwavering faith in a leader. The author demonstrates the ease with which people can be instilled with fear and manipulated. “The White Disease” continues to grace theatre stages today, serving as evidence of its timeless relevance and topicality. Performed in Ukrainian. Presented by: “Centre for Ukrainian Initiatives” Association

Bartolomey’s individual musical language draws inspiration from Bach’s timeless legacy of motifs and rhythms. Here he weaves his own music into movements from Baroque suites, drawing contrasts which are both sharply defined and carefully considered. Bach's music is presented in its pristine form, while Bartolomey's original compositions serve as contemporary commentaries, adding layers of colour and introspection to the performance. The duality at the heart of this programme is evident not least in the artist’s choice of instruments. The first, a cello made in 1727 by David Tecchler in Rome, represents the music of Bach. The second is a faithful copy of the first, made by Philip Bonhoeffer in 2021, and represents the music of Bartolemey.

Fierrabras, Schubert’s most important operatic work, tells the story of five young people who are bound together by ties of love and friendship. They are of different social ranks, but are all the offspring of rulers who are sworn enemies. This semi-concertante performance is the first opportunity for a Vienna audience to hear this music since Claudio Abbado’s brilliant production in 1988.

In their book “On Connection”, Kae Tempest describes the constantly magical transformation of space through the connection between artist and audience. In alignment with George Lewis’s perspective on his piece “As We May Feel,” where the “associative assemblage only fully unfolds in the encounter with the listener, whereby the activity of listening and that of composing flow into one another,” and Wolfgang Mitterer’s concept of “musical temperature” capturing the enchantment of music-making, Tempest consistently circles back to the self-contained connection that creators and recipients forge. Amuse-Gueule Much like a welcome culinary treat from the kitchen, our version represents an ear-opening introduction, where we extend a direct invitation to interested audience members to join us in anticipation of each concert. In less than an hour, we swiftly navigate through the thrilling highlights of the upcoming programme, allowing our visitors to actively engage in this unique listening experience right in the midst of the ensemble. Start: 18:15 (free admission). Biglietto sospeso – The Soliticket Inspired by the wonderful Neapolitan tradition of caffè sospeso, where the buyer of a cup of coffee financially supports the cup of an unknown fellow customer in a gesture of solidarity, we present the Biglietto sospeso for the concerts in the YOU BETTER LISTEN! series. It’s essentially a one-for-two deal!

Michael Dangl read from his "Hymn to the South" last spring in Das MuTh. Now he plunges headlong into in the hottest, most untamed and liberating season – with his own new poems and trusty companions; Konstantin Wecker spending time on the beach, Bertolt Brecht swimming in lakes and rivers, Henry Miller conversing by the pool, and Marina Tsvetaeva sending her regards from the seaside.

The music of Johann Sebastian Bach blends emotionality, strictness and clarity, and is distinguished by its absolute timelessness. No musician can escape encountering this central star in the firmament of composers during their training. Some of Bach's three-part inventions in a string trio arrangement are followed by two masterpieces from later centuries, by Ravel and Tchaikovsky, to illustrate what has been learned thanks to Bach.

The first functioning devices were constructed in the early 19th century. It only took on its actual form and function, which we still recognise today, at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century. The distinctive sounds associated with this machine may no longer be familiar: the striking noises, the chime signalling the end of the line, the whirring and rattling of the platen, the clicking of the lever as it moved – altogether, an arsenal of percussive noises imbued with musical qualities. Together with flautist Eric Lamb and pianist Nora Skuta, percussionist Rupert Struber has dedicated an entire programme to this enchanting device, which of course includes the classic of all typewriter compositions, Leroy Anderson's “The Typewriter”. The typewriter, an invention of the arms manufacturer Remington, is also a feminist issue; the “typing lady” – smartly dressed and with the posture of a piano player – was first seen as a threat because writing and working in the administration room was no longer a male domain. However, there was a swift effort by some men to deny women the opportunity to engage in literary production Typing was reduced to a poorly compensated, undervalued occupation for women. As a tangent in the concert, we encounter Arnold Schönberg, who, interestingly, also invented a typewriter!

Artworks, particularly musical compositions in our context, frequently acquire a unique potency when their creation follows an unconventional path, incorporating elements that supposedly should not be combined in a certain way, or when they challenge established canonical norms through rule-breaking. The tension that can emerge in this way often finds release in joyful discoveries and new insights, prompting reflection on both oneself and the world, or at least give rise to intriguing questions. With music by composer Sonja Mutić and Oliver Johnson, known in the club music sphere as Dorian Concept, we aim to fulfil this promise and leave the audience with compelling questions lingering in the air at the conclusion of our inaugural concert series. Starts at 18:15 (free admission).

Shepherds play an important part in the Christmas story. They may have been just “simple folk”, but they were the first to hear of the birth of Jesus. Many songs tell their story: how they were lying in the fields when they saw the angel; how they were afraid at first, then overcame their fear; and how they made their way to the stable in Bethlehem, where they found the baby Jesus, and they rejoiced. The shepherds in the Bible represent all mankind. Each and every one of us can and should identify with them. The Good Shepherds have become a Christmas tradition here at MuTh. The Vienna Boys' Choir perform music of many kinds, and come together with their audience to celebrate Christmas as one big family. The audience can join in too, of course: whoever wants to can sing along with that wonderful classic “Silent Night”. And that’s how a single concert becomes a festival of music for all the family.
