“I am a Frenchman from the East, a humanist, a rationalist touched by religion, a Catholic with a Jewish mind, a true revolutionary” – this is how Joseph Roth, the acclaimed writer born in 1894 in Eastern Galicia (present-day Ukraine), described himself. Erwin Steinhauer, together with Ukrainian-born accordionist Andrej Serkov, brings Joseph Roth’s literary worlds to life. Their performance features Der Vorzeigeschüler (The Model Pupil), the tale of an ambitious man who appears to succeed at everything, yet is denied both laughter and love. They also present the novella Die Büste des Kaisers (The Emperor’s Bust), in which Roth sends Count Morstin on a journey through the waning days of the monarchy – an exile mirroring Roth’s own, which began in 1933.   Available with a subscription! Television brought Stefan Jürgens fame, but he has long since captivated audiences on the theatre stage and as a singer-songwriter. Now, the Nestroy Award winner is celebrating poetry with his first collection Loveletters – mutwillige Liebesergüsse (Loveletters – Wilful Outpourings of Love), and his reading performance Nenn’ es Liebe (Call it Love). Through these works, he explores the many facets of love – the healing power it holds, its fierce and sometimes destructive passion, its freedom and its readiness for sacrifice. Drawing from world literature and his own creations, Stefan Jürgens concludes that love follows no rules. It is what shapes us and, ultimately, what matters most.   Available with a subscription! Seats for this event are available with a CHAMBER MUSIC subscription – with 20% discount. Regular advance ticket sales start on 1 September.
