LIEBER EIN SAXOPHON (I PREFER A SAXOPHONE)

Curated by Gerald Preinfalk

“lieber ein saxophon hätte ich ja auch / an die lippen geführt anstatt” (I would sooner guide a saxophone / toward my lips instead”): these are the first words of a poem by Ernst Jandl. Gerald Preinfalk, the multi-talented saxophone and clarinet virtuoso who inhabits the space between jazz and new music, borrowed from this poem for the title of his MuTh cycle. For Preinfalk this cycle constitutes “a taking stock, a screenshot of my musical work. I want to set out - without any stylistic priorities - the multi-layered nature of my interests, and the variety of situations this has opened up for me. This goes back to my childhood, when I learned to play classical clarinet, continues through my interest in jazz and contemporary classical music, and extends to passing on knowledge to the next generation. Never before have I had the opportunity to present my musical existence in such a concentrated form.”

The saxophone can do more than wail in a jazz club. But that requires composers like Bernhard Lang and Javier Quislant, who create new compositions. Preinfalk values both of them – and he responds to them as a composer as well.

Many people are familiar with Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, and many also know Eddie Daniels’ version for clarinet. Stefan Neubauer takes these on and Preinfalk puts himself into the mix as an improviser.

“What could possibly be finer than a saxophone? Lots of saxophones!” That’s why Preinfalk has arranged  Gershwin’s “Concerto in F” and written his own material for the “KUG-SAX-SIPPIA” saxophone orchestra .
