MASTERS & STUDENTS

Masters in many fields

“Wretched is the poor student who fails to surpass his master.” Such was the view of Leonardo da Vinci. The five concerts in our new “Masters & Students” series will allow you to judge whether this bold statement is true or not, while enjoying music-making of the highest calibre. Christian Altenburger and his students reveal the marvellous range of musical possibilities which a group of six string instruments offers. Flip Philipp & Arthur Nikolay lay down a musical challenge for young jazz group Elevating Four, then leave the field clear for them to play. Florian Boesch is not only a superb singer of Lieder and Oratorio, but also a University professor. Here he appears with a selection of his best students, who demonstrate that the next generation of performers have also mastered the art of Lieder singing. Matthias Bartolomey teaches at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. His acclaimed CelloVersum group follow up their previous success with a return visit. This choir of celli lends its rich, full-bodied sound to the music of Gesualdo, Piazzolla, Bernstein and Bartolomey. And numerous clarinettists who have studied with the outstanding Matthias Schorn over a ten-year period will give of their best to delight the MuTh audience.

A chance to hear three of the most famous works for flute trio in a single evening. These works were written by different composers, each of them deemed a piano marvel of their time. Hummel’s “Schöne Minka” variations (based on a popular Russian folk song) are amongst his best-known works. Weber wrote his trio for a doctor friend, “Dr Philipp Jungh zu Prag”, who was himself an outstanding cellist and chamber musician. At the premiere performance of his much-loved D Minor Piano trio in Leipzig in 1840, Mendelssohn took the piano part himself. The flute often replaces the violin part in this work — indeed, this variation was authorised by the composer himself, and it is considered one of the finest in the chamber music repertoire of lyrical, romantic pieces.

In this concert Flip Philipp, that master of the vibraphone and marimba, plays jazz standards with his student Arthur Nikolay. They perform as a duet and in combination with the young jazz band Elevating Four, which is led by Nikolay himself. Over the course of the evening each instrument has its turn in the spotlight, showcasing its particular characteristics.. After the interval, Elevating Four play some of their own compositions, as well as interpretations of a selection from the jazz canon.

In these loud, fast-moving times, it’s not easy for lyrical Lieder to gain new listeners. But those who do can find themselves deeply moved and enriched by the experience. Baritone Florian Boesch knows this art form well. As Professor of Lied and Oratorium at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, he is instrumental in passing it on to the next generation. A selection of students sing Lieder and multi-part songs. They demonstrate that this art form is certainly not a thing of the past, and a strong future lies ahead.

Following their highly successful MuTh premiere in September 2021, the six cellists of Celloversum take us on a second journey through the ages. Travelling in time from the Renaissance to the present day, they showcase the instrument’s vast range of colours and its remarkable versatility. The programme encompasses Gesualdo’s mystical, spiritual “Spheres”, the passionate rhythms and cantilenas of Bernstein, and the new groove-infused compositions of Matthias Bartolomey. The players are drawn from Bartolomey’s colleagues and students. Together, their playing demonstrates not only an orchestral power and intensity, but also a subtlety and intimacy more closely associated with chamber music.
