MASTERS & STUDENTS
Masters in many fields
“Wretched is the poor student who fails to surpass his master.” Such was the view of Leonardo da Vinci. The five concerts in our new “Masters & Students” series will allow you to judge whether this bold statement is true or not, while enjoying music-making of the highest calibre. Christian Altenburger and his students reveal the marvellous range of musical possibilities which a group of six string instruments offers. Flip Philipp & Arthur Nikolay lay down a musical challenge for young jazz group Elevating Four, then leave the field clear for them to play. Florian Boesch is not only a superb singer of Lieder and Oratorio, but also a University professor. Here he appears with a selection of his best students, who demonstrate that the next generation of performers have also mastered the art of Lieder singing. Matthias Bartolomey teaches at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. His acclaimed CelloVersum group follow up their previous success with a return visit. This choir of celli lends its rich, full-bodied sound to the music of Gesualdo, Piazzolla, Bernstein and Bartolomey. And numerous clarinettists who have studied with the outstanding Matthias Schorn over a ten-year period will give of their best to delight the MuTh audience.

Following their highly successful MuTh premiere in September 2021, the six cellists of Celloversum take us on a second journey through the ages. Travelling in time from the Renaissance to the present day, they showcase the instrument’s vast range of colours and its remarkable versatility. The programme encompasses Gesualdo’s mystical, spiritual “Spheres”, the passionate rhythms and cantilenas of Bernstein, and the new groove-infused compositions of Matthias Bartolomey. The players are drawn from Bartolomey’s colleagues and students. Together, their playing demonstrates not only an orchestral power and intensity, but also a subtlety and intimacy more closely associated with chamber music.

More clarinets than you could ever imagine! Matthias Schorn, Vienna Philharmonic player and lecturer at the MUK (the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna), invites you to come along to his 10-year class reunion. MUK graduates such as Frederic Alvarado-Dupuy (Federspiel), Andrea Götsch (Vienna Philharmonic), Daniel Hochstöger (Dresden Philharmonic), Thomas Lukschander (Joseph Haydn Konservatorium Eisenstadt), Benjamin Feilmair (Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz) and many more have all come together for a truly exciting event. The evening falls somewhere between a concert and a show, with folk songs, contemporary pieces, and improvised music. A great reunion - not to be missed!
