POOL OF INVENTION

Music, Film & Theatre – living, improvised, and reinvented

Improvisations on Bach’s music, suffused with the sounds of jazz and pop. A giant octopus reaches out to Mozart with its puppet tentacles. In Hannes Buchinger’s film “Alm-Alltage” (Daily life in a mountain pasture), cows, pretty as a picture, gaze into the sunset from their meadow in the mountains; the film screening is accompanied by live music. And in the finale, that venerable musical form, the fugue, is reinvented. “Pool of Invention” (POI) sees itself as an interdisciplinary platform for various art forms. The crossover artists who work with POI masterminds Florian Willeitner and Ivan Turkalj present art not previously seen or heard. In their MuTh cycle, Pool of Invention pay their respects to artistic traditions by breathing new life into them, in a host of different ways.

What’s a giant octopus doing in a hotel room? What’s going on with this opera singer, having a mid-life crisis? The Salzburg Marionette Theatre present their acclaimed production “Pùnkitititi!”. Written for the 2020 Salzburg Mozart Week, it can now be seen in Vienna! This is a homage to Mozart’s tireless spirit of discovery, which managed to combine humour, tension, opera, the imaginary world and real life.

Hannes Buchinger spent three years filming his cows, horses and donkeys. A photographer by profession, he mounts his camera on a tripod, presses the shutter release, then walks towards his animals and enters the picture. He is not only the leading man in this remarkably moving film; he is also its screenwriter, director, cameraman and editor. Florian Willeitner has created a programme of live music for “Der Halter – Ein Film über Alm-Alltage” (The livestock owner - a film about everyday life in a mountain pasture ).  The accompaniment intersperses works from widely different periods with improvisations and original compositions, bringing depth and humour to the scenes on screen.

“What the Fugue?” The Pool of Invention’s “New Piano Trio” offer a previously unheard take on that most exalted of disciplines in baroque musical composition: the fugue. In a previous piece, “Fuga in Odd“, Florian Willeitner fused strict counterpoint with the rhythmic fire of Balkan music. Now he has taken this concept further. The preludes and fugues presented here are new compositions; they pay homage to the individual musical languages of various composers from the past and the present day.
