Eine Erfolgsproduktion des Campus Augarten erlebt ihre Wiederaufnahme. In Henry Purcells Semi-Oper „Fairy Queen“ zeigen der Chorus Juventus und die Wiener Chormädchen erneut ihr gesangliches und schauspielerisches Talent. Auch das premieren-bewährte Duo Barbara Palmetzhofer (Regie) und Johannes Pell (Dirigent) ist wieder an Bord. Titania, die Feenkönigin, singende, tanzende Feen, Geister der Nacht, des Schlafes, des Geheimnisses, ein singender Poet, das Bauernpaar Mopsa und Corydon, der Handwerksbursche Zettel, junge Liebende auf der Suche zueinander und viele Gestalten mehr finden sich in einer lauen Sommernacht im Wald – das Chaos ist vorgegeben. Aber welche Rolle spielt dabei der listige Kobold Puck?Als H. Purcell 1692 sein Maskenspiel oder seine sogenannte Semi-Oper „The Fairy Queen“ schrieb, war deren Verbindung zu W. Shakespeares „Ein Sommernachtstraum“ für das Publikum mehr als offensichtlich. Im Laufe der Zeit verlagerte sich der Schwerpunkt jedoch zunehmend auf die Musik und weg vom Ausgangstext. Unsere Inszenierung kehrt zu den Wurzeln der Masques zurück: Sie kombiniert Purcells wunderschöne Musik mit Szenen aus Shakespeares Stück, um die Geschichte wieder zum Leben zu erwecken.Schülerinnen und Schüler des Oberstufenrealgymnasiums der Wiener Sängerknaben, die Wiener Chormädchen und Studierende der Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität Wien singen, spielen und tanzen begleitet von einem Instrumentalensemble die beliebte Semi-Oper von Henry Purcell in einer gekürzten und bearbeiteten Fassung. Eine Produktion des Campus AugartenGeeignet ab 6 Jahren.

A successful Campus Augarten production returns to the stage. In Henry Purcell’s semi-opera “The Fairy Queen”, Chorus Juventus and the Vienna Girls Choir once again demonstrate their vocal talents and acting ability. The experienced partnership of Barbara Palmetzhofer (director) and Johannes Pell (conductor), who have premiered many productions together,  are also on the team. Titania, the Fairy Queen; singing and dancing fairies; spirits of the night, of sleep and of mystery; a singing poet; the farm couple Mopsa and Corydon; the journeyman Zettel; young lovers searching for one another, and many other figures besides, all find themselves in the forest on a mild summer night. Chaos is inevitable. But what role will that wily  sprite Puck play in all this? In 1692, when Henry Purcell wrote his masque, or semi-opera, “The Fairy Queen”, its connection to William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was more than obvious to audiences. Over time, however, the focus shifted increasingly towards the music and away from the original text. Our production returns to the roots of the masque: it combines Purcell’s beautiful music with scenes from Shakespeare’s play in order to bring the story back to life. Accompanied by an instrumental ensemble, pupils from the upper secondary school of the Vienna Boys Choir, the Vienna Girls’ Choir, and students from the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna sing, act and dance Henry Purcell’s popular semi-opera, in this abridged and adapted version. In this concert, the NFMO heads off to the Oscars: We’ve scoured the world to bring you snapshots of famous film locations and movie sets. We are delighted to perform film music for you that has made countless cinema-goers laugh, cry, marvel, quiver with fear, and swing along in their seats. We travel with Winnetou to the Wild West, fly into the infinite reaches of the universe with Star Wars, laugh with the gendarmes of Saint-Tropez, weep aboard the Titanic, search for The Third Man in Vienna, and nearly jump out of our skins at Hitchcock’s famous shower scene. We’ll stop off at lots of other cinematic locations on our journey, all of them connected by wonderful music. Come along and enjoy – there’ll be a few surprises! Pianist Maria Radutu and violinist Sophie Heinrich bring great women composers into the spotlight through music and commentary. The result is a series of vivid portraits of modern female musicians from a wide range of cultures. The evening offers a broad sweep of sounds, encompassing  Olga Neuwirth’s pulsating soundspaces, Kaija Saariaho’s floating, nocturnal colours, the glowing warmth of music by Florence Price, and Eleanor Alberga’s poetic, transcultural lullaby. A new work by Margareta Ferek-Petric and the lyrical avant-garde sounds of Du Yun lead to the closing piece, the powerful Sonata No. 4 by Grażyna Bacewicz.

“The Cry of the Soul” is based on William Shakespeare’s classic drama “Macbeth”. In this production, the traditional art of Anhui Opera is fused with bold innovations. A virtual and expressive form of staging is used to represent the work’s classical background. The action is set in ancient China. The Kingdom of Wei is suddenly attacked by the Kingdom of Xu and stands on the brink of destruction. General Ziyin of Wei takes command in this critical situation; he leads his troops to victory and returns in triumph. On the way back, he encounters three witches, who deliver three prophecies to him: first he will be appointed Marquis of Jingbian, then promoted to Chancellor, and finally he will become king. At first, Ziyin gives no credence to these predictions. But when the first two prophecies come true, he is seduced by the prospect of power, and is drawn into an inner conflict between this lust for power and his conscience. Urged on by his wife Qijiang, he eventually murders the reigning king and seizes the throne. After ascending the throne, however, they both live in constant fear. Ultimately this interplay between conscience and the threat posed by enemy troops leads to mental breakdown, which ends with the story of the couple’s self-destruction. In cooperation with Wien Modern With sound artist Isabella Forciniti and trombonist Matthias Muche, Studio Dan brings to the stage two of the most exciting voices currently active on the European creative scene. Together, they explore the dynamics of diverse artistic practices, social systems and musical concepts. The ancient and powerful voice of the trombone meets the digital complexity of the computer; solo and ensemble join together; lines of sound delicately fork and divide, while the bass thumps... At the core of this evening lies a musical experiment about being together. How does the ensemble – a finely balanced, organically grown “biotope”, developed over many years – react to impulsive interventions from outside? And conversely: what strength do the disruptors draw from the collective? Amuse-Gueule We invite interested audience members to join us before the performance to savour a tasty appetiser in musical form. In the space of just under an hour, we race through the highlights of the upcoming programme, allowing our visitors to actively engage in this unique listening experience from within the ensemble itself. “Our first kiss in November,” Robert Schumann noted in his diary in 1835. The person he kissed for the first time was Clara, the daughter of his teacher Friedrich Wieck. Clara was 16, Robert was 25 years old. But her strict father ruled against their relationship. The two lovers embarked on an intense correspondence. Ultimately it took a court action to sanction their marriage, which took place in 1840, on the day before Clara’s 21st birthday. Long fascinated by Robert Schumann, Catalina Butcaru, together with Cornelius Obonya, enters the world of this young love through their secret letters and the discreet messages Robert conveyed through his piano pieces.

A river as a fellow performer. This hosted concert takes the Danube as its starting point for a journey of sonic discovery. Contemporary music is set alongside nature, voice, and space – audible, visible, and constantly moving. At the centre of this event lie works by the composer and researcher Pia Palme. Through video, electronics, and post-processed recordings of the natural world, she brings the Danube right into the concert hall. The river’s currents, eddies, and sounds all become part of the music, and engage in a dialogue with voice and cello. Adding pieces by MORTON FELDMAN, MEREDITH MONK and HILDEGARD VON BINGEN, allows a multilayered soundspace to emerge, embracing meditation, play, and nature-watching. The commentary helps make contemporary music accessible and encourages the audience to pay close attention. Can a river make music? In this hosted concert, the Danube becomes an adventure in sound. Together we discover how water sounds, rushes, and swirls – and how these sounds can become music. The composer Pia Palme brings the Danube right onto the stage through videos, recordings of the natural world, and a particular selection of instruments. The river “plays” along; voices sing, we hear the sound of a cello, and suddenly the concert hall feels like an underwater world. Ranging from calm, mysterious sounds to lively, cheerful songs by Meredith Monk, this concert is all about listening closely, enjoying a state of wonder, and thinking about issues such as: Who lives in the river? Why is water so important? And how can music and nature belong together? A concert for listening, feeling, and discovering

“Piano Music” invites the audience to embark on a musical journey of exceptional intensity, with a focus on the wealth of tone colours the piano possesses. The experience is enhanced visually by projected images which have their roots in Ilse Krempl’s extraordinary imagination and artistic creativity. Students from the mdw’s piano classes will perform works for solo piano by Leonhard Leeb, alongside their own compositions and classical masterpieces by the great composers.
