Amahl and the night visitors
One-act Christmas opera by Gian-Carlo Menotti
“A cheerful celebration”, “Musical theatre at its very finest” (Online Merker): Because last year’s production was so popular, MuTh has arranged a repeat visit from Amahl the boy shepherd. Menotti’s one-act opera is a Christmas classic in the USA, and was that country’s most frequently-performed opera of the 20th century.
Amahl lives with his mother in a small rural village in Judea, where shepherds tend their flocks. His leg is paralysed, so he needs crutches to get around. One night Amahl is woken by the bright light of a brilliant star. Suddenly, there is a knock at the door, announcing the unexpected arrival of the Three Wise Men – an encounter which leads to a Christmastime wonder for Amahl.
