RESCHEDULED: “Schee muass´ sein!”
Friedrich Gulda - a multimedia portrait
“Play every note as if your life depended on it”, wrote Friedrich Gulda in his notebook in 1954, and he endeavoured to stay true to this maxim for the rest of his life.
Born in Vienna in 1930, he was feted as a great virtuoso by the classical music community from a very early age. His recordings of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart set standards which still stand today. But for him, classical music soon became too constricting. He was happy to cross boundaries, and he leapt into jazz, free improvisation, and even Techno. As a result, he met hostility and mockery; but others loved him for it.
The CrossNova Ensemble remember this brilliant and exceptional musical personality in a multimedia portrait created out of words, images and sounds. It features a cross-section of Gulda’s musical work, including early compositions form his student years, jazz pieces, his (in)famous Golowin songs, and excerpts from his cello concerto. The event includes speech recordings from a diverse range of those who knew him, such as Hans Landesmann, Karl Löbl, Heinrich Schiff and Otto Schenk.
