Laughter is good for you – Humour in music
Wissen Sie schon...(Did you know)? Sprinzl in the MuTh
Seriousness is often taken as the most important quality of “classical music” — and “serious music” is an even worse description. In fact, composers have always tried to incorporate subtle jokes and little tricks into their work. And an assortment of musical comics and arrangers have taken this further, with jokes of a much more emphatic nature. There is a rich and long-standing tradition here, stretching from Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven to more recent musical comedians such as Gerard Hoffnung, Victor Borge and Hans Liberg. No-one should expect to leave this Shrove Monday event with a serious expression on their face. And what’s more, it’s good for you. Laughter is still the best medicine!
