Ö1 Musiksalon– Metamorphoses
2020 concert series, in collaboration with the OeNB
The renowned Acies Quartet (prima la musica 2003, Gradum ad parnassum 2006, Mozart-Prize 2007, Ö1 Artist of the Year 2007) bring their creative enthusiasm to the MuTh stage in an exquisite programme. Glenn Gould, a pianist of noted eccentricity and legendary abilities, said of his String Quartet Op.1: “It includes almost every style – going right back to Palestrina (to please my teachers), and right up to Schönberg (to annoy my teachers).”
Joseph Haydn’s Op.20 set of string quartets, known as the “Sun” quartets, signalled a very different metamorphosis: a marked shift in the string quartet form, away from an ad-hoc ensemble under the guidance of the first violin to one of the most important genres in musical history, where all four players perform as equal partners.
For his part, in his “Cypresses” Antonín Dvořák fashioned old love songs into a string quartet cycle.
GLENN GOULD: String Quartet Op. 1
JOSEPH HAYDN: String quartet No. 2 in C major, from the Op.20 “Sun” quartets
