The Erlkings: Neighbours at peace
Lieder by Beethoven and Schubert, translated into the finest English and played with great virtuosity
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Vienna’s most famous resident, The Erlkings have chosen to refresh his 200-year-old Lieder using the musical lexicon of the 21st century. Beethoven’s lifelong association with the Neapolitan mandolin gives these latest arrangements a particular resonance. With that in mind, the Erlkings have invited the Neapolitan mandolin player Marcello Smigliante Gentile to join them on stage.
The genius of Beethoven, the sharp Viennese wit of the Erlkings and the Mediterranean charm of the mandolin all combine to make this programme a unique experience, and a declaration of love for both Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert.
Selected Lieder by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert — neighbours at peace in the Zentralfriedhof cemetery.
