Ulrich Drechsler’s Liminal Zone: Caramel
Album Release Concert
After three years 0f preparation, clarinettist and composer Ulrich Drechsler now presents his new ensemble and his latest album – both named “Caramel” – here at MuTh. This represents the first part of his LIMINAL ZONE soundworld, which consists of three different musical projects. By paring everything back to the barest essentials, Drechsler creates moments of extreme intensity – timeless, lyrical music which drifts between neo-classicism, minimalism, film music and jazz.
“Caramel” blends the freedom found in improvisation with the structural clarity of the classical form and the emotional depth found in oriental music. The radiant voice of coloratura soprano Özlem Bulut floats above the elegant sounds of Oliver Steger’s double bass, the pulsating rhythms of Raphael Keuschnigg’s drums, and the virtuoso lines cascading from Amir Ahmadi’s piano. Meanwhile slam poet Yasmin Hafedh conjures magic out of words, all to the sound of Ulrich Drechsler’s masterful bass clarinet playing.
