Where did the Love Songs go?
Flip Philipp & Bertl Mayer present Jazz Classics
An unorthodox revival of love songs, with an unusual instrumentation. Cool jazz revivalists Flip Philipp (vibraphone), Bertl Mayer (harmonica), Hans Strasser (double bass) and Wolfi Rainer (drums) are all great fans of jazz standards and the musical opportunities they present.
“Jazz is a language”, says Flip Philipp. “Every individual has to find their own identity by making their own music.” And the essential identity of this combo is evident in Flip Philipp’s jazz compositions. But this concert also features interpretations of well-known pieces by Duke Ellington, George Shearing and sax legend Jimmy Heath. For Heath, interaction between the players lay at the heart of the creative musical process. And Flip Philipp, Bertl Mayer & co. use the same secret recipe: they listen to each other constantly, and when they’re improvising they put the same blind trust in each other as you would find a group of mountaineers.
