Vienna Boys’ Choir Singin’ in the MuTh
A song can say more than a thousand words. Especially when it’s sung not just by a solo performer or a choir, but by the Vienna Boys’ Choir and their whole audience. In this brand-new series of concerts the Vienna Boys’ Choir, conducted by Gerald Wirth, perform songs from all around the world. Some are old favourites, while others are much less well-known. The choir welcome musical companions to these events, and they always encourage the audience to sing along with gusto.

Children’s opera in the MuTh
Classic operas can be accessible to young children! You can see this for yourself in two productions: a fast-paced classic from the Wiener Taschenoper, and a MuTh in-house production, “Das Zauberwort” (the Magic Word), a musical play with the Vienna Boys’ Choir. This series of concerts is rounded off by an exciting piece of dance theatre from the ballet company of the Natalya Sats Musical Theatre of Moscow, choreographed by Kirill Simonov..

Family in the MuTh

Finally! For the very first time, we are pleased to present a series of afternoon concerts for the whole family, suitable for young and old between the ages of 8 and 100. There is something for everybody. The “Schubadour” shows how Schubert Lieder have been transformed into pop songs. Students from the upper classes of the Vienna Boys’ Choir Secondary School present a Christmas fairy tale. Elisabeth Naske and Rose Breuss use the powerful vocabulary of music and dance to express the multiplicities of meaning in spoken language. And Karin Meissl creates an unparalleled soundscape in a concert featuring audience participation.

Bartolomeys in the MuTh
The first two concerts in this series focus on Beethoven and feature piano trios and cello sonatas. Last year André Previn died shortly before his 90th birthday. In memory of the composer, Matthias Bartolomey plays his 1993 cello sonata, which he worked on with André Previn in New York. The cycle draws to a close with two string quintets by Mozart and Dvořák, performed in an orchestral setting.

The Erlkings in the Muth
No matter if you’re young or old, whether you prefer pop or the classics, live in London or Vienna, it’s hard for anyone to resist the pull of the Erlkings’ music. Their reworkings of Lieder into the folk music format are wonderfully contemporary. “Schubert with an addictive edge” ran the headline in the “Mainpost”, referring to the Erlkings’ rearrangements of the composer’s work. The quartet is led by the charismatic singer Bryan Benner, and their performances are always refreshing. The Erlkings show how Lieder written by Schubert two hundred years ago can, when performed in English, still retain their vitality, charm and lightness of touch, without diminishing their depth.

Timna Brauer in the MuTh
No matter whether she’s reciting a gripping text, performing Jewish Shabbat songs, singing pieces by Kurt Weill or Zarah Leander — or one of her own songs — Timna Brauer always displays great stage presence, a powerful expressiveness, and a fiery passion. And all of this can be seen here at MuTh in three evening concerts. Timna Brauer’s interactive musical reading with the bassetto a tre ensemble gives the audience a heartrending glimpse into the fateful world of the Warsaw ghetto. Her stories and songs from the Jewish day of rest prove a treat for the ears. And her performances of catchy songs with the Vienna Tango Quintet are an absolute delight and go straight to the heart.

G’mischter Satz (a blended vintage) in the MuTh
Six sparkling evening concerts with very different flavours. The “G’mischter Satz in the MuTh” series not only showcases jazz ensembles such as Meyer’s Nachtcafé and Flip Philipp & Bertl Mayer — all well worth hearing — it also offers two evenings of unusual musical cabaret. The Martin Gasselsberger Trio, joined for part of their performance by Frank Hoffmann on vocals, praise the “heavenly power” of love. Meanwhile Dominik Maringer, Kathrin Hanak and CrossNova put their trust in the therapeutic effects of favourites from Franz Léhar’s operettas. The Florian Willeitner String Experience paint an unconventional portrait of Mozart; and Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz, accompanied by Adrian Eröd, Ekaterina Frolova and Andrea Linsbauer, relates some amusing tales from Leopoldstadt.

At MuTh, cancelled does not mean postponed!

We had to cancel numerous productions because of the measures required to contain the coronavirus epidemic. But we are delighted that we have been able to rescue three gems and carry them over tino our new season. The powerful voice of Monika Ballwein can be heard in fresh arrangements of Beatles hits — the Beatles as you’ve never heard them before! Trumpeter Joe Hofbauer leads his swinging Big Band, guaranteed to raise the roof. And Adele Neuhauser reads from her thrilling autobiography, “Ich war mein größter Feind” (I was my own worst enemy). She will be accompanied by the “chamber punk jazz band” Edi Nulz, which features her son on guitar.

Mozart in my hands
The Junge Philharmonie Wien (Vienna Youth Philharmonic) team up with performers of international stature to present Mozart’s Piano Concertos

Mozart was especially fond of his piano concertos. They suggest a carefree lightness and ease, but interpreting them is far from easy. MuTh and Junge Philharmonie Wien are offering gifted young pianists the opportunity to introduce themselves to the listening public in a professional setting by performing a Mozart piano concerto with an orchestra. The players are chosen by a committee that includes the pianist Paul Gulda, professor of piano Franz Zettl, the conductor of “prima la musica Wien” Angelika Persterer-Ornig, and conductor Michael Lessky.

Wissen Sie schon…(Do you know)?
Sprinzl in the MuTh

“Your ears are in for a treat”. Michael Sprinzl presents his second series of wide-ranging lectures, each illustrated with a wealth of examples for the listener. His 75-minute musical presentations in the MuTh Atelier focus on four themes. These are: nature and music; humour in music; the perfection of unfinished compositions; and the music of the wild 1880s. And each event will finish with a convivial session in the bar.
