Adventures in Foreign Lands
Philharmonia APA Hong Kong play Gershwin, Leung and Stravinsky

* abgespielt

Philharmonia APA—20 talented graduates of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts returns to Hong Kong—Vienna Music Festival and presents Adventures in Foreign Lands. The concert features works by Gershwin, Austin Leung and Stravinsky.

Conducted by Sharon Andrea Choa, Philharmonia APA will lead the audience through three ‘adventures in foreign lands’ transformed as musical fantasies by three disparate composers of unique styles. Opening the program is Gershwin’s An American in Paris, which famously portrays the impressions of an American visitor in Paris. This is followed by a new commission by Philharmonia APA, a piece by Hong Kong composer Austin Leung entitled A Chinese in London – the music makes clever use of motifs and techniques of both the Gershwin and Stravinsky, but shaped into a narrative that illustrates the composer’s personal voice and experience as a new resident in London. The second half of the concert presents Stravinsky’s Histoire du soldat (suite), a dramatic work based on a Russian folklore and incorporates musical styles as diverse as jazz, ‘Latin American’ dance music, and the 20th-century avant-garde.

A newly formed ensemble, Philharmonia APA (PAPA) is made up of young professionals graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The formation of PAPA is inspired by the distinguished achievements of three decades of music graduates. In HKAPA’s 33rd year, PAPA has been formed to continue the high-caliber performances established by APA-trained musicians, and also to unite the network of music graduates and serve the Hong Kong community by contributing to its arts scene.
