A programme of autobiographical masterpieces, most notably works by Bed?ich Smetana and Dmitri Shostakovich, presented here by an emerging young group of musicians, Alliance Quartett Wien. Smetana’s string quartet “Aus meinem Leben” ends abruptly, with just a long, high note remaining. This is how Smetana gave musical expression to his deafness, which was accompanied by severe tinnitus – a fate which also befell Beethoven. Shostakovich formally dedicated his eighth string quartets to the victims of Fascism and war; however, it is thoroughly autobiographical. This is a disturbing testimony of a life, a piece which bears the musical initials of its composer.
Programme: “Mein Leben”:
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: String quartet in C minor, Op. 18/4
DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH: String quartet no. 8 in C minor, Op. 110

Aus meinem Leben” T 116
