Angelika Kirchschlager and Marianne Sägebrecht
An evening of music and literature by Thomas Kahry

* abgespielt

A unique encounter is scheduled to take place at MuTh in May 2015. Angelika Kirchschlager and Marianne Sägebrecht are two world-famous stars who have enchanted their audiences with their warmth and authenticity. Two women who are known not only for their artistic work, but also for their search for the truly important in life. Both these artists follow their own paths and are not easily pigeonholed. What links them both is a love of communicating with others and a willingness to share their experiences – successes and failures, the happy times and the sad – with their audience.

Angelika Kirchschlager and Marianne Sägebrecht will perform together for the first time at MuTh, having put together an evening whose themes and music move and connect them both. The artists will narrate some of their own stories and texts, and you will also be able to hear great works of world literature and some of the finest lieder and arias. This is an evening of encounters; there may well be a few surprises and guest appearances. “My soul is not for sale” (Meine Seele ist unverkäuflich).

MARIANNE SÄGEBRECHT is principally known for films such as “Bagdad Cafe”, “Zuckerbaby” (Sugarbaby), “Der Rosenkrieg”“, “Martha et moi” and “Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar”. She has played alongside actors such as Michael Douglas, Danny de Vito, John Malkovich, Roberto Benigni, Gérard Depardieu, Kathleen Turner and Michel Piccoli. But nowadays Marianne Sägebrecht is equally well-known for the Hollywood roles she rejects. People who this Bavarian-born artist has turned down include big names such as Woody Allen, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Whoopi Goldberg. This is because she dedicates herself wholeheartedly to the assignments she takes on, and will only commit to projects that she can stand behind completely and unreservedly. In addition to her work as an actor, Marianne Sägebrecht is also the author of numerous successful books in which she offers a humorous and philosophical portrayal of her views on life. “I rediscover myself each and every day.” (Ich erfinde mich jeden Tag neu) Angelika Kirchschlager

ANGELIKA KIRCHSCHLAGER has enjoyed worldwide success on all of the world’s greatest stages, from La Scala in Milan to the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She has performed under the finest conductors of our time. Complete operas have been written for this mezzosoprano. These include Nicholas Maw’s “Sophie’s Choice”, which received its premiere at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in London, and was subsequently taken to the Kennedy Center in Washington by Plácido Domingo. Angelika Kirchschlager has won a Grammy and four Echo Klassik awards. In 2013 she received the European Cultural Award. In 2014, the “Presse” newspaper named her Austrian Woman of the Year. Despite her global success, for Angelika Kirchschlager the grounding provided by her humanitarian activities and the links with her homeland remains very important. By way of example: she is, for the second time, touring all the Austrian states to perform without charge in small towns and villages, so that she can bring classical lieder singing to the people.
