Butcaru & Steude
Works by Bartók, Enescu, Szymanovski and Brahms

This concert marks the return to MuTh of the Romanian pianist Catalina Butcaru, who considers her playing as a form of poetry. The “Neuer Merkur” particularly praised the breadth of her expressive ability, describing it as ranging from “sublime refinement to a powerful, determined allure”.

Her skill as a sensitive accompanist has been demonstrated on the MuTh stage before, having performed with Volkhard Steude here last year. Now they are reprising their previous success. This time the programme has a bias towards folklore, including pieces by Béla Bartók and the “father of Polish music”, Karol Szymanovski.
Programme:
George Enescu: Sonata in A minor, “Torso”, published posthumously (1911)
Béla Bartók: Romanian Folk Dances (1918)
Béla Bartók: Rhapsody No. 2 for violin and piano
Karol Szymanovski: Romance in D major, Op. 23 (1911)
Johannes Brahms: Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108
