“Love’s a wild bird that none can tame” – the famous story of Carmen and Don José, told here in a gripping new adaptation. Tscho Theissing has taken Bizet’s 1875 classic opera – the story of a wild love affair; a tale of passion, jealousy, the desire to be free, and murder – and tailored it into a perfect fit for mezzosoprano Natalia Kawalek, tenor Juraj Hollý and actor Jürgen Maurer. His modern musical arrangements are played by the legendary Flying Schnörtzenbrekkers. At its premiere in Paris, Carmen was a flop. But now it ranks as one of the most frequently performed and best-loved operas ever. The marvellous aria “Habanera”, for which Bizet also wrote the lyrics, is an essential part of this unusual evening of opera with its theme of love and cruelty.

Text based on Prosper Mérimée’s novel “Carmen” and the opera libretto by H. Meilhac and L. Halévy / Music: Georges Bizet
