Das Zauberwort (The Magic Word – in German)
Musical comedy by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839-1901) / A production by MuTh and the Vienna Boys' Choir

“Zauberwort”, Op. 153 (1888) by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger (1839-1901), is a musical comedy for children. It revolves around themes of language and understanding, humour and mischief, magic and responsibility. The stage is filled with real and pretend Caliphs, magicians, sages, frogs, storks, an owl, a real princess, and one or two mirages. Expect singing, magic, croaking, and — of course — laughter.

The literary source for the piece is “Die Geschichte vom Kalif Storch“ (The Story of Caliph Stork) by Wilhelm Hauff (1802-1827), a “literary” fairy tale which tells the various stories of travellers in a caravan, and is taken from Hauff’s 1826 Fairy Tale Almanac. The libretto is by Rheinberger’s wife Fanny von Hoffnaass.

Wolfgang Dosch and the Vienna Boys’ Choir bring this seldom-performed work, based on the story by Wilhelm Hauff, to the MuTh stage.
