The Vienna Boys’ Choir is quite probably the oldest boy band in the world. Boy choristers have been singing in Vienna’s Burgkapelle for over 700 years. Initially they served the House of Babenberg, then later the House of Hapsburg. When Emperor Maximilian I moved his court to Vienna in 1498, it marked the beginning of the famous Wiener Hofmusikkapelle and the birth of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn and Franz Schubert – these are not the only celebrated musicians to sing in the Choir.

Today the Vienna Boys’ Choir consists of around 100 choristers aged 9 to 14, organised for concert purposes into four individual choirs. Together they perform around 300 concerts a year, singing to a combined audience of almost half a million people right around the world. At MuTh, audience members can accompany the choristers on their travels — all without leaving the comfort of their seats.

The four choirs that make up the Vienna Boys’ Choir take turns to perform their current programme on various Friday afternoons throughout the year. You can hear choral music ranging from the Middle Ages to the modern day: some sung a cappella, some with piano accompaniment, and some with the backing of an orchestra. Our MuTh concert hall’s architecture and acoustic guarantee an unforgettable concert experience. The music embraces the audience, and the choristers’ enthusiasm is highly contagious. Those who so wish can go onto the stage after the concert for a short “Meet and greet” with the choristers and their conductor. There’s no better way to get the weekend started!
