Hilfe, Hilfe, die Globolinks!
by Gian Carlo Menotti (In German language)

* abgespielt

In Gian Carlo Menotti’s Science Fiction Opera, the protagonists remind us in song that “Musik haltet in der Seele fest, sonst schnüren sich die Herzen zu” (Music cleaves to the soul, and fastens to our hearts). This message truly is both timeless and contemporary. But seldom have these words had the existential significance they take on in “Hilfe, Hilfe, die Globolinks!” Strange beings have landed on Earth and are threatening mankind. Whoever comes into contact with them mutates into a Globolink. Nothing can stop the extra-terrestrials; music is the only thing rumoured to frighten them. But is that really true? A party of schoolchildren on an excursion find themselves in great danger! But don’t worry, the opera – which is good fun for adults as well as children – doesn’t get too scary: humour and jokes are always plentiful in Menotti’s work, both in his drama and his music. In the end, combined musical strength puts the intruders to flight – and we are all left marvelling at the magical power of music.
