Jimmy’s Soloists play Beethoven
Spotlight on the piano / Jimmy Chiang & Friends in the MuTh

In this second concert of his MuTh cycle, Jimmy Chiang appears not only as a pianist but also as a conductor, in a programme entirely devoted to Beethoven.  Jimmy Chiang directs the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and presents the capacious voice of Anna Baxter, whose singing demonstrates her brilliant understanding of concert aria performance. South Korean pianist Eunju Lee plays Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 37 This piece’s C minor tonality lends it a rather bleak character, but this brightens unexpectedly in the second movement. The interval is followed by Beethoven’s Second Symphony. This was composed shortly before Beethoven wrote his moving Heiligenstadt Testament. In this harrowing document, Beethoven describes his anxieties and fears in the face of his advancing deafness. It may well have been these fears which surface at times in his Second Symphony, periodically clouding its essentially joyful character.
