Being streamed live on Facebook

TV broadcast on ORF III: 9th December 2020, 11:20 p.m.

Psychoanalyst Erika Freeman talks with Markus Kupferblum about wonder and love. In the process she tells of Vienna and the German “Anschluss” of 1938, the founding of the state of Israel, her work as a psychoanalyst in New York and Hollywood, her encounters with various artists, and her numerous companions. Her permanently youthful outlook stems from a positive, intelligent attitude to life, and every conversation with her is insightful, invigorating and highly entertaining.

Erika Freeman was born in Vienna in 1927 and, being a Jew, had to flee from the Nazi regime at the age of 12. Having escaped to to New York, she studied there at Columbia University and went on to become a highly regarded psychoanalyst. She counselled many politicians, including Golda Meir at the time she was Israeli Prime Minister, and she provided support to various Hollywood legends including Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando and Woody Allen. Ultimately, Erika Freeman herself became a star: she was a regular guest on US talk shows in the 1970s, and she was invited to provide psychoanalytical comment on almost every major event. At an advanced age, she is once again becoming close to her native Austria, and she works tirelessly to ensure the events she witnessed are not forgotten.

Markus Kupferblum is known for his interdisciplinary work spanning opera, theatre and film, as well as for developing new and unusual performance spaces. He has directed in numerous countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas, and he continues to teach directing and dramatic writing in universities at home and abroad. In 2012 Kupferblum founded the European Theatre Day of Tolerance, and he is a member of International P.E.N. He is a holder of the Nestroy Prize, awarded by the City of Vienna.
