“Sterben werd’ ich, um zu leben!” (I must die, in order to live!) pronounces the choir steadfastly in the solemn E flat finale. Until then, there is a road to be travelled. Many important questions arise. Whoever hears this cry cannot ignore it; they must respond. “And I provide the response in the final movement”, says Mahler. After an unforgettable premiere in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in 2002 to celebrate “50 years of reconstruction”, Michael Lessky turns to this masterpiece once more, and gives his Vienna Young Philharmonic musicians the chance to play this “drama without scenery”.
