Why did Franz Schubert set so many scenes from Goethe’s “Faust” to music? Was he perhaps considering writing a Faust opera of his own, as both Schumann and Mahler did shortly afterwards? As so often is the case, he was a visionary who pushed forward the boundaries in many different areas during his short lifetime.

Robert Meyer recites the most important Faust monologues, and Michael Lessky prefaces and follows this unique drama with orchestral works by Schubert expert Thomas Pernes.
