From the novella “Wir töten Stella” (We Murder Stella) by Marlen Haushofer
Music by Johann Sebastian Bach

In her acclaimed novella “Wir töten Stella” (We Murder Stella), which first appeared in 1958, Marlen Haushofer examines the hypocrisy of a seemingly solid yet dysfunctional bourgeois family. She tells the story with great compassion and sensitivity, with no reproachful undertones or moralising. This is a coldly analytical inventory of a failed relationship. The exceptional German actress Martina Gedeck, who took the leading female role in Haushofer’s “Die Wand” (The Wall), has just finished filming “Stella” under the direction of Julian Pölsler. Now, in this evening of readings, she presents “Stella” in conjunction with Matthias Bartolomey. He will also play selections from Bach suites – with the music representing a second level of thought in this first-person narrative of a woman’s story.
