The Armed Man
A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins

* abgespielt

No time in history has ever produced such terrifying weapons as the 20th century. That’s reason enough for the millennium to call for a vision of peace, at least through the peaceful medium of music. Commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict, Karl Jenkins’ piece for choir and full orchestra is a contemporary example of a Mass and is based on a fifteenth-century French song, “L’Homme Armé”. The overall work contains religious and secular texts which are set as counterpoints between the various sections of a full Christian Mass. Karl Jenkins combines the language of classical music with elements of experimental jazz and World Music.

This magnificent work moves the listener at the deepest level: sometimes through fanfare calls to battle, and sometimes through angelic choruses. It ranges from earthly struggle to heavenly peace, ending with the bitter realisation “Better is Peace”.
