The Nutcracker is a ballet in two acts by Peter Ilyvich Tchaikovsky.

The story of the Nutcracker and the Mouse King was written by E. T. A. Hoffmann . Alexandre Dumas’ version was set to music by Peter Ilyvich Tchaikovsky and became of the most popular ballets. It is regularly performed in theatres and opera houses, usually around Christmas time, and it speaks to young and old alike. The composer was prompted to write this work by a play which his brother Modest wrote for his sister’s children. The work had its first performance on 18th December 1892 at the Mariinski Theatre in Saint Petersburg, with choreography by Lew Iwanow and set design by opera director Iwan Wsewoloschski. This was less than a year before Tchaikovsky’s death.
