Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 3

Mahler’s Third: his great apotheosis on the multiple levels of Creation – with the final movement describing the highest level of all, love. He once said of this piece, “This is what God has told me.” Can setting this symphony in a Christmas context allow us to hear it differently? And if Christmas is accompanied by Mahler’s music – from its beginning through to its end – perhaps we can experience Christmas differently for once?
