Timna Brauer & Elias Meiri Ensemble
Flamenco Judaico

If you delve into the riches of Jewish music, sooner or later you will come across the treasure trove of Spain’s Jewish canzones, also known as Sephardic songs. These originated in high Spanish culture during the Middle Ages. They were handed down orally, and after the Jews were driven out of Spain in 1492, they lived on in the Sephardic diaspora. Some of the songs were adopted by gypsies in Andalusia, creating a link with flamenco. Timna Brauer is keen to build a bridge between the Jewish, the Christian and the Islamic, to commemorate the high culture which developed jointly in all three traditions. As well as “classics” from the Sephardic songbook, the programme includes Andalusian Arab songs and new compositions based on old texts.
