Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) is known in posterity as a celebrated composer, a direct successor to Beethoven and a companion to Robert Schumann. He became unintentionally involved in a cultural battle with the New German School, whose proponents were Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner.
