  • Kinderoper in the MuTh – ABO 1

  • Sprinzl in the MuTh

“Your ears are in for a treat”. We can only love that which we know. This is why we invited musical expert and communications guru Dipl.-Ing. Michael Sprinzl — notwithstanding his existing teaching responsibilities at the University of Vienna, and at the FH Wien des bfi (University of Applied Sciences) — to spend four evenings at the MuTh studio on a series of music workshops. His witty presentations are legendary. Full of musical examples, they are likely to answer any questions you may have. And if things don’t turn out as planned for once, remember: questions from the audience are not only “welcome”, they are actively encouraged!

Strong voices: Monika Ballwein and Helen Schneider cover a range of music stretching from the greatest pop group of all time, the Beatles, to modern jazz, and Adele Neuhauser reads from her exciting autobiography “Ich war mein größter Feind” (I was my own worst enemy). She will be accompanied by the Edi Nulz “chamber-punk-jazz” band, with whom her son plays guitar. Kammerschauspielerin Sona MacDonald appears with “The Whizkey Brothers”, adding her voice to their jazz sound.

  • Mozart in my hands

Mozart was especially fond of his piano concertos. They suggest a carefree lightness and ease, but interpreting them is far from easy.
MuTh and the Junge Philharmonie Wien are offering gifted young pianists the opportunity to introduce themselves to the listening public in a professional setting, by performing a Mozart piano concerto with an orchestra. The players are chosen by a committee that includes the pianist Paul Gulda, professor of piano Franz Zettl, the conductor of “prima la musica Wien” Angelika Persterer-Ornig, and conductor Michael Lessky.

    in the MuTh

Two musical lectures on “Love and connection”, which, in terms of their textual and musical content, examine these broad themes in very different ways. One is a highly personal look at the life and music of Arik Brauer; the other is a performance by a rather unusual duo, featuring dance and piano music. This highly varied cycle could be seen as an argument for artistic synthesis.

  • Christian Altenburger
    in the MuTh

“String instruments offer endless possibilities. They have proved a source of inspiration for composers through every musical epoch, and still do so today!” Because he is fascinated by chamber music, Christian Altenburger has once again devised a three-evening cycle specifically for the 2019/20 season at MuTh. Continuing the cooperation with the mdw, a number of outstanding artists will perform alongside top students from the University for Music and the Performing Arts. Over the course of three evenings they will present three widely differing programmes, ranging from J.S. Bach to Kurt Schwertsik.

  • G’mischter Satz (a blended vintage) in the MuTh

“So what’s happening?” The five concerts in this year’s G’mischter Satz series are all characterised by originality and courage. The Erlkings take 200-year-old Lieder, give them a present-day setting and translate them into English. The CrossNova ensemble celebrates the particular style of humour that is Wiener Schmäh. Flip Philipp & Bertl Mayer offer the best in modern jazz sounds; and trumpeter Joe Hofbauer leads an All-Star Big Band, which simply swings. Karl Markovics, Clemens Bartolomey and the VBW Orchestra (Vereinigten Bühnen Wien, or United Stages Vienna) have put together a packed evening to commemorate Friedrich Gulda and H. C. Artmann.

  • Welcome to the fringes in the MuTh

This new concert series, which is presented by Helmut Jasbar, gives the audience an opportunity to hear first-hand the new musical talent that is emerging across Europe. Various musical forms — classical, jazz, and world music — meet and merge, making genre boundaries an irrelevance. Each “Fringes” evening is really two concerts – one ensemble plays in the first half, and a second performs after the interval. So over the course of four evenings a total of eight different groups will perform. Each brings to the stage their own zest for life, and each radiates their joy in music-making.

  • Florian Krumpöck in the MuTh

“Do not merely practice your art, but force your way into its secrets; it deserves that, for only art and science can exalt man to divinity.” (Ludwig van Beethoven.) Vienna pianist Florian Krumpöck began his MuTh journey into Beethoven last season. Now he sets out afresh, exploring the contradictory world of the composer who has been called “probably the greatest revolutionary in the history of music”. Over the course of two evenings Florian Krumpöck, who was appointed “Bösendorfer Artist” in 2018, continues his “Pilgerfahrt zu Beethoven (Pilgrimage to Beethoven)“ with performances of Beethoven piano sonatas. His interpretations are unpretentious yet exceptionally expressive, and are interspersed here with illuminating insights from distinguished guests into the composer’s life and work. A musical and literary journey into Beethoven for the year 2020 — a journey that will open the eyes, the ears and the heart.

  • Daniel Ottensamer in the MuTh

Daniel Ottensamer’s chosen instrument lends itself to a wide range of musical genres — as he convincingly demonstrates in this MuTh cycle. Over the course of two evenings, the Vienna Philharmonic’s solo clarinettist appears alongside a number of musical fellow-travellers in a variety of settings, leading us through a varied programme in his well-known lively yet well-grounded style. Expect a few surprises; the clarinet has been used in pioneering and defining ways not just in classical music, but also in jazz, folk music, and klezmer.

  • Minetti Quartett in the MuTh

“Music played with the same shared spirit and formed from a single breath; in effect, music poured from a single vessel.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) The internationally sought-after Minetti Quartet were trained by musicians from the Alban Berg Quartet, and made their debut 17 years ago performing Haydn. Now, for the third year in succession, they are curating and performing a cycle here at MuTh. Expect virtuosic harmonic interplay of the very highest order, coupled with a reverential enthusiasm for the masters of the string quartet tradition!

  • Schorny in the MuTh

Without a clarinet, there wouldn’t be any point! Matthias Schorn creates a “Clarinet mob” at MuTh, presents the Benny Goodman story, and shows himself to be not just a Schubert fan, but also a sensitive Lieder accompanist. Schorn is solo clarinettist with the Vienna Philharmonic. He has founded not only a musical ensemble, but also a festival. He brings all his experience to bear in his latest MuTh programme, while also introducing some exceptional students from the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK).

  • Bartolomeys in the MuTh

This year’s cycle comprises four programmes. They were all developed specifically for MuTh, and each concert is presented by Franz and Matthias Bartolomey, who appear alongside various long-standing friends from the worlds of art and culture. The “final opus” category is strongly represented here, with the last works of Schubert, Bruch and Richard Strauss all featured. The appearance of individuals such as Michael Dangl, Veronika Hagen, Benjamin Schmid and Ariane Hearing offers an additional guarantee that each of these evenings will be something rather special.

  • Volkhard Steude in the MuTh

Violinist Volkhard Steude performs three concerts in duet with celebrated pianists. Through these concerts, he questions the sense in dividing music into epochs and movements. “For example — at what point did the Classical period end? Is there a clear dividing line before the Romantic?” Or: “Is Impressionism only found in French music?” The Vienna Philharmonic Concertmaster had devised a series of suitably multi-layered programmes for his cycle at MuTh this year.

  • Innehalten — Pause for Thought

A pause to reflect, to re-energise, to find purpose and focus. The recipe for this much-loved concert series blends sacred choral music with thought-provoking contributions. The Vienna Boys’ Choir perform works by well-known composers, and guest speakers such as the historian Philipp Blom offer some stimulating food for thought. A fellowship meal after the event provides the opportunity for people to talk with each other.

  • Children’s opera in the MuTh – ABO 2 (Subscription ticket 2)

Yes, it is possible — children can connect with opera of a high artistic standard, provided it is presented in an age-appropriate way! This is demonstrated here by two Wiener Taschenoper productions, each based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, as well as an in-house MuTh production, “Das Zauberwort” (the Magic Word), a musical play with the Vienna Boys’ Choir, written by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger. The cycle is rounded off by an international guest performance.
