  • The Vienna Boys’ Choir in the MuTh: Best of

The Vienna Boys’ Choir’s “Best of” cycle promises a delightful ambience, with a blend of energy and contemplation which creates the perfect atmosphere for the run-up to Christmas. The series encompasses minnesang; it shows how a certain Viennese composer lived and experienced the world; and it includes the highly successful production “Die Hirten” (The Shepherds), which has now become a firm favourite at MuTh. It also includes Austria’s oldest music to feature dance (“Carmina Austriaca”), as well as the life and work of a former member of the Vienna Boys’ Choir, known and loved by all (“Gezeichnet: Franz Schubert” – Signed, Franz Schubert).

  • Wiener Sängerknaben in The MuTh
    Innehalten — Pause for Reflection

A pause for reflection, a chance to re-energise: this series of concerts links the Vienna Boys’ Choir back to its historic tradition. The choir was founded over 500 years ago. Its job was to sing a Mass every day, to ensure the Emperor’s spiritual well-being. And today the boy choristers are still creating a place where spirituality can unfold. Besides performances of sacred choral works by the master composers of times gone by — a task the choir fulfils with youthful gusto — each of these events features a notable guest speaker and provides some thought-provoking ideas. MuTh’s intimate atmosphere provides the ideal space for these occasions. Strong dynamics work especially well here, and louder sounds reverberate and linger. Each concert is followed by a light “fellowship meal”. This provides an opportunity to come together and talk about the event.

  • Children’s opera in the MuTh

We have treats in store for all those, young and old, who are fans of “The Little Prince”, as well as for everyone who enjoys, or would like to get to know, the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales, the songs of Humperdinck, or the vision of John Cage. The Vienna Boys’ Choir perform Gerald Wirth’s touching children’s opera, based on the classic book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. This is a revised production, with the role of Narrator added specifically for MuTh. This part is taken by the celebrated tenor Michael Schade. We are also continuing our fruitful collaboration with Wiener Taschenoper (Vienna Pocket Opera). They will be presenting their successful production of “Schneewittchen” (Snow White, by Mitterer & Dienstbier) and that ingenious journey in sound “A House Full of Music” (by Cage & Hensel), both staged by Jevgenij Sitochin. Finally, a wonderful guest ensemble from Oper Stuttgart considers mankind’s deep yearning for happiness and fulfilment in “Gold“, by Evers & Verbrugge.

  • TrioVanBeethoven in the MuTh

Following their successful performance of Beethoven’s complete works for piano trio in 2017, TrioVanBeethoven devote their latest MuTh cycle to specific musical and spiritual groupings from the Romantic period. Three evenings have been scheduled. Each concert promises to be an emotionally absorbing journey, with Clemens Zeilinger at the helm as our tour guide. “With energy and passion. Lively, but not too fast! Slowly, with heartfelt sentiment. With fire! The “stage directions” with which Robert Schumann prefaces the sole movement of his Piano Trio No. 1 offer an excellent indication of what TrioVanBeethoven has in store for the MuTh audience.

  • Daniel Ottensamer in the MuTh

The clarinet can make itself at home in any setting. Over the course of three evenings featuring some very different line-ups, Chamber musician Daniel Ottensamer demonstrates the enormous bandwidth of his chosen instrument. For it is not only in classical music that the clarinet has been deployed in a formative, groundbreaking fashion; the same holds true in jazz, and folk music, and klezmer. Ottensamer’s “Clarinotts” trio offers a virtuosic mix of styles, while the quartet he has formed with colleagues from the “Philharmonix” ensemble promises purely classical music. Add solo clarinet to a big-band sound and you get some irrepressible swing; whereas a phenomenal trio featuring soprano Romana Amerling (and, of course, the clarinet) focuses on more songlike material.

  • Christopher Hinterhuber & Friends in the MuTh
    Music & literature

In a three-part, multi-faceted MuTh project, pianist Christopher Hinterhuber takes the excellent idea of combining music and literature and brings it to fruition. Florian Teichtmeister takes to the stage during a Schubert evening with Markus Schirmer and reads texts by Paul Valéry and Imre Kertész. Cornelius Obonya and the Doderer family are in charge of the Beethoven evening. And the Vienna Reed Quintet, with Christopher Hinterhuber and Max Simonischek, plumb the depths to find out what Johann Sebastian Bach had in common with Melville’s “Moby Dick”.

  • Florian Krumpöck in the MuTh
Pilgerfahrt zu Beethoven (A pilgrimage to Beethoven)

In his “Pilgrimage to Beethoven” project, the Viennese pianist Florian Krumpöck delves into that “New Testament of piano music”: the 32 piano sonatas composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, “musical history’s greatest revolutionary, who inhabited his own contradictory universe”. This journey through music and literature was developed over several years. Each evening Florian Krumpöck will have a notable companion at his side who will accompany the musical pilgrimage with writings and letters from, to and concerning the “utopian composer” from Bonn.

  • Helmut Jasbar in the MuTh
    Jasbar’s Pocket Pasticcio

Music that falls between stools. Music that defies categorisation. In his four-part MuTh series, the guitarist and Ö1 host Helmut Jasbar acts as both performer and presenter. He introduces an extremely diverse range of musicians who play in a wide range of styles. Classical, jazz, folk, chamber music, world music and improvisation are blended with joy, passion and great musicianship into a totally unique sound. This fosters musical conversations at a personal, intimate level, and leaves plenty of space for quieter moments; music without boundaries, yet still with its own logic; music that combines a cooperative feel with the sophistication of chamber playing.

  • Clara Frühstück in the Muth
    Chamber music done differently

The artist Clara Frühstück continues her series of flamboyant appearances at MuTh with two newly imagined performances, . On their “lauten Frauen” (Women Out Loud) evening, the (all-female) Trio Frühstück collaborate with performance artist Veza María Fernández Ramos and interpret several noteworthy works written exclusively by female composers. If from time to time it goes a little quiet on the stage, you can be sure – without revealing too much at this point – that there will also be some “playing, dancing, whispering and shouting”. On the second evening, Clara Frühstück turns her attention to her personal masterpiece and a version of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, electronically edited and re-invented with the help of Daniel Mayer. It remains to be seen whether this second evening proves to be any more peaceful. In any event, it promises to be a feast for (almost) all the senses!

  • Mozart in my hands
The Vienna Youth Philharmonic Orchestra with some internationally recognised talents present Mozart’s Piano Concertos

“But this is truly the land of the clavier, the finest place in the world for a man of my profession.” Today Mozart’s piano concertos are enormously popular. They also belong to that selection of pieces which the composer wanted to keep for himself and “a small circle of devotees and connoisseurs who promise not to let them leave their hands”. And now these unique concertos are in the hands of some extremely promising talents.

MuTh and the Vienna Young Philharmonic are offering gifted young pianists the opportunity to introduce themselves to the listening public in a professional setting, by performing a Mozart piano concerto in concert with an orchestra.

In no other musical form has a single composer pushed forward musical development as quickly or to such enduring effect as Mozart did in the period from 1784 to 1786. He composed twelve piano concertos in less than three years. The total number eventually reached 27, and each exists as a universe in itself.

This new cycle at MuTh includes every Mozart piano concert and stretches over a three-year period. And where better to hold it than our Concert Hall here in the Augarten – the very place where Mozart himself conducted his Augarten concerts. He played the Concerto for Two Pianos KV 365 with Josefine Auernhammer, and his Symphony KV 338 actually had its first performance with a minuet composed at a later date. This piece will also be heard at the opening concert of this cycle.

  • G’mischter Satz (a blended vintage) in the MuTh

“Both humour and music are the stuff of life. Having the chance to combine a pleasure with a joy and to fool around with music is an absolute privilege!” Christoph Wagner Trenkwitz loves what he does. And that’s precisely why his enthusiasm is so irresistible. In his new cycle “G’mischter Satz (A blended vintage) in the MuTh”, Wagner Trenkwitz releases a barrage of humour. Over the course of four evenings, he shows that, here at MuTh, any kind of creative and artistic endeavour is possible. Together with KS Adrian Eröd and Andrea Linsbauer, he presents comic song from Mozart to Kreisler; and in October, Christoph Schobesberger resurrects the incomparable “King of the Hill” Frank Sinatra, who sadly died some twenty years ago. In January, Salonorchester Alcazar perform some lively hits to bring smiles in the depths of winter; and the mime duo Bodecker & Neander bring the whole mini-festival to a glittering close with their stunning visual theatre.
