Hummel and Forelle (English: bumblebee and trout) | Franz und Matthias Bartolomey

Chamber music | Concert | Adults

Two piano quintets which share a bond. It was at a house concert at Steyr in Upper Austria that Schubert first got to know the amateur cellist Sylvester Paumgartner. Paumgartner  induced Schubert to write a movement of variations on the song “Die Forelle” (the trout). Furthermore, he encouraged Schubert to take Hummel’s universally popular piano quintet, composed in 1802, as a template for the piece’s form and instrumentation. The resulting composition became Schubert’s best-known chamber music work.
