BLACK MUSIC AND SING ALONG

This concert is dedicated to the life and music of Florence Price (1887–1953), one of the most important women composers of the 20^th century, whose work was overlooked for far too long. Hers is a moving life story: as an African-American woman, she had to overcome enormous social barriers to get her music heard, but still created a body of work of great expressive power and individuality. Songs, piano pieces and spirituals paint the portrait of an artist who combined European art music with African-American musical traditions. With interludes of “Black piano music” and spirituals for community singing, this concert offers a vivid encounter with music that continues to move us and is still relevant today. Her music is brought to life by mezzo-soprano and Volksoper star Katia Ledoux and the internationally renowned pianist and Price expert Sascha El Mouissi.
