THE SECRET OF THE PRINCESS CONSORT

Huangmei Opera developed from rural folk songs and is now one of China’s most popular theatrical forms. Its melodies are sweet and simple, easy to understand, and the lyrics are close to everyday life. They tell of the joys and sorrows of ordinary people and express the values of simple families. “The Secret of the Princess Consort” tells the story of Feng Suzhen, a young woman from a humble background who risks her life to save her husband. Despite numerous adversities, she ultimately succeeds in achieving her goal and entering into a happy marriage. The piece presents a drama that is almost fairytale-like, yet still easy to relate to: a woman disguises herself as a man, secretly takes part in examinations, happens to meet the top graduate of the imperial examination and, thanks to her resourcefulness, overcomes danger on her wedding night. In this way, the image emerges of a kind, courageous and clever girl from ancient times.
