DER HAGESTOLZ (THE OLD BACHELOR)
Philipp Hochmair | A fresh interpretation, infused with electro sounds
Electronica | Literature | Concert | Play | Reading | Adults
Philipp Hochmair has revived Adalbert Stifter’s story Der Hagestolz to mark his 50th birthday. In the story, a young man who has no intention of marrying visits his elderly uncle. After hearing the uncle’s life story, the young man is left with a deep yearning for connection and companionship. Hochmair, Rainer, and Clasen have set this to music with a fusion of electro-jazz. “He doesn’t scream, he doesn’t rip off his clothes, he doesn’t jump – he just sits and reads,” they promise. Caught between generations himself, Hochmair seeks to bring Stifter’s beautiful yet little-read text to life for the audience.
