It emerged from the rich cultural heritage of the northern Chinese plains in Jiangsu, drawing on the traditional sound forms of “Huai-Diao” and “La-Diao,” renowned for their hauntingly beautiful and deeply expressive melodies. Its songs capture the resilience and hardships of rural life. The Jiangsu Huai Opera Ensemble is among the foremost groups dedicated to preserving and advancing this rich traditional art form. Following in the tradition of the renowned “Chen style,” the artists blend classical cultural heritage with modern aesthetics – using innovative stage design and contemporary musical arrangements to breathe new life into traditional works.

The performance Die Legende von Zhao Wu Niang (The Legend of Zhao Wu Niang) tells the poignant story of an extraordinary woman who, after the death of her parents-in-law, sets out alone for the capital in search of her missing husband, Cai Bojie. Zhao Wu Niang’s sorrowful journey unfolds through emotionally charged scenes such as “Meagre Bread and Cold Water,” “Cutting Off Her Hair in Memory of Her Parents,” and “Setting Off in Search of Her Husband.”
Using traditional techniques such as water sleeve play and knee steps, Chen Cheng creates a powerful portrayal of a woman’s inner strength and unwavering perseverance as she follows her path despite repeated humiliation. The performance presents a deeply moving exploration of love, duty and the burdens of a fate shaped by both personal and societal forces.
