Xi opera from Wuxi | Chinese opera comes to Vienna
Opera | Concert | Play | Adults
XI opera
Born in the water-rich landscapes of southern China, amidst the gentle melody of the Wu dialect, it is deeply characterised by the mild nature of the region around Lake Tai. It collects and narrates the joys and sorrows of people’s everyday lives, embedded in well-known melodies and with touching, lyrical songs and subtle depictions that express the gentle nature of Jiangnan culture. The Wuxi Xi Opera Theatre is recognised as a cornerstone in the preservation and revitalisation of this genre. Its performers showcase traditional techniques, including handkerchief play and fan play, executed with exceptional grace and precision.

The Pearl Pagoda relates the poignant tale of the impoverished scholar Fang Qing. Scenes such as Handing over the Pagoda are rich in subtle allusions. In Falling Snow, the performer executes a drop and roll with remarkable skill. Meanwhile, in the powerful Return in Honour, the technique of belt swinging seamlessly blends emotion and action, creating an unforgettable impact.
These moments deliver a rollercoaster of emotions for the audience, revealing not only the artistic mastery of Xi opera but also offering a profound exploration of the complexities of human life, social injustice and personal resilience.
