DORNRÖSCHEN (SLEEPING BEAUTY)
Gala performance by the DANCEARTS ballet school

This year our gala performance ballet is one of the most famous of all classical ballets. With the help of Tchaikovsky’s ravishingly beautiful score, “Dornröschen” (Sleeping Beauty) has become a firm fixture in the ballet repertoire. Fairies have a significant part to play, both in the plot and the libretto. The magical classical variations danced around the cradle of the infant Princess Aurora represent gifts bestowed by a series of fairies, who appear one after the other: the fairy of beauty, the fairy of wit, the fairy of grace, the fairy of eloquence and the fairy of power. The evil fairy Carabosse, who was mistakenly not invited to baby Aurora’s christening, puts a curse on the Princess, and promises that she will die on her sixteenth birthday. The Lilac Fairy is unable to completely overturn the curse; when the day comes, the girl falls asleep for a hundred years, a sleep from which she can be released by a kiss from a prince.
