Instead of working at home in the kitchen, Hansel and Gretel run riot, singing “Suse, dear Suse, what’s rustling in the straw?” and “Brother, Come and Dance with Me”, their mother sends them outside for some fresh air. Caught up in their excitement, the siblings fail to notice how far they are venturing into the forest, which grows ever more enchanting and mysterious, filled with strange creatures that begin to captivate them. When they stumble upon a wonderfully fragrant gingerbread house, their happiness feels complete. But should they trust the kind invitation from the mysterious lady? Can’t they sense the danger lurking, or notice the giant broom in the corner? Yet, it’s already too late to escape. Spellbound by the witch’s hypnotic gaze, Hansel is locked in the stable, while the oven starts to smoke ominously… Will the courageous Gretel be able to outsmart the wicked witch and save them both from her grasp?
Students from the upper secondary school of the Vienna Boys Choir and the Vienna Girls Choir perform the beloved fairy-tale opera in a condensed version, arranged for chamber orchestra, aimed at audiences aged 5 and over.
