The Peninsula Youth Orchestra (PYO) organisation is based on the San Francisco Peninsula, south of San Francisco, California. PYO was founded by Mitchell Sardou Klein, Director of Music, and Sara Salsbury, Director of Preparatory Orchestras, and is now celebrating its 27th anniversary. PYO is the musical home of over 400 student musicians, who perform in four full orchestras and numerous chamber music ensembles. The main purpose of the organisation is to provide a full range of musical and orchestral experiences for young musicians aged 6 to 18 by bringing them together to learn, rehearse and perform in an educational environment. The members study the traditional orchestral repertoire with a focus on contemporary literature and works by American composers. Under the direction of Mitchell Sardou Klein, PYO’s most advanced orchestra, currently on its 2024 European tour, has toured extensively in Australia, Japan and Europe and received the prestigious ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming of American Music on Tour Abroad in 2000. In recent years, the orchestra has performed at the Sydney Opera House, the Liszt Academy, Dvorak Hall, Palau de Musica Cataluna and other venues in Austria, the Baltic States, England, France, Germany and Italy. Their 2013 tour included appearances in Prague, Leipzig and Dresden, while in 2015 they performed in Nice, Aix-en-Provence and Barcelona and in 2017 they played in Munich, Cremona and Milan. Their last tour in 2019 included performances in Finland, Estonia and Tallinn. The current 2024 tour includes return engagements in Budapest, Vienna and Prague.
