This poignant connection can only culminate in tragedy on the eve of the First World War. Fritz Karl, accompanied by music, reads – or rather, performs – the role of Anton Hofmiller in a virtuoso manner. He skilfully embodies the soul tormented by indecision and despondency, thereby adding another layer of depth to Zweig’s novel.
