But before the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s and Schubert’s deaths are celebrated in quick succession, it’s time to dance the night away. The music of his celebrated colleagues and successors, which is as clever and amusing as it is artfully conceived, accompanies the festivities – whether operetta, waltzes or the no longer entirely politically correct ‘Weibermarsch’ (March of the Women) from Franz Lehár’s ‘Die lustige Witwe’ (The Merry Widow) – anything goes during carnival season…
