  • “Your ears are in for a treat”. Michael Sprinzl presents his second series of wide-ranging lectures, each illustrated with a wealth of examples for the listener. His 75-minute musical presentations in the MuTh Atelier focus on four topics: Nature and music; humour in music; the perfection of unfinished compositions; and the music of the roaring 1880s. And each event will finish with a convivial session in the bar.

  • Mozart in my hands
    in the MuTh

Junge Philharmonie Wien (the Vienna Youth Philharmonic) team up with musicians of international stature to perform Mozart’s Piano Concertos

Mozart was especially fond of his piano concertos. They suggest a carefree lightness and ease, but interpreting them is far from easy. MuTh and Junge Philharmonie Wien are offering gifted young pianists the opportunity to introduce themselves to the listening public in a professional setting by performing a Mozart piano concerto with an orchestra. The players are chosen by a committee that includes the pianist Paul Gulda, professor of piano Franz Zettl, the conductor of “prima la musica Wien” Angelika Persterer-Ornig, and conductor Michael Lessky.

  • We had to cancel numerous productions because of the measures required to contain the coronavirus epidemic. But we are delighted that we have been able to rescue three gems and carry them over into our new season. The powerful voice of Monika Ballwein can be heard in fresh arrangements of Beatles hits — the Beatles as you’ve never heard them before! Trumpeter Joe Hofbauer leads his swinging Big Band, guaranteed to raise the roof. And Adele Neuhauser reads from her thrilling autobiography, “Ich war mein größter Feind” (I was my own worst enemy). She will be accompanied by the “chamber punk jazz band” Edi Nulz, which features her son on guitar.

  • Six sparkling evening concerts with very different flavours. The “G’mischter Satz in the MuTh” series not only showcases jazz ensembles such as Meyer’s Nachtcafé and Flip Philipp & Bertl Mayer — all well worth hearing — it also offers two evenings of unusual musical cabaret. The Martin Gasselsberger Trio, joined for part of their performance by Frank Hoffmann on vocals, praise the “heavenly power” of love. Meanwhile Dominik Maringer, Kathrin Hanak and CrossNova put their trust in the therapeutic effects of favourites from Franz Léhar’s operettas. The Florian Willeitner String Experience paint an unconventional portrait of Mozart; and Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz, accompanied by Adrian Eröd, Ekaterina Frolova and Andrea Linsbauer, relates some amusing tales from Leopoldstadt.

PLEASE NOTE! Change of date for Meyer’s Nachtcafe: 28th April 2021 – 19:30

  • Timna Brauer
    in the MuTh

No matter whether she’s reciting a gripping text, performing Jewish Shabbat songs, singing pieces by Kurt Weill or Zarah Leander – or one of her own songs – Timna Brauer always displays great stage presence, a powerful expressiveness, and a fiery passion. And all of this can be seen here at MuTh in three evening concerts. Timna Brauer’s interactive musical reading with the ensemble bassetto a tre gives the audience a heartrending glimpse into the fateful world of the Warsaw ghetto. Her stories and songs from the Jewish day of rest prove a treat for the ears. And her performances of catchy numbers with the Vienna Tango Quintet are an absolute delight and go straight to the heart.

  • The Erlkings
    in the MuTh

“Anyone who loves songs on the radio is actually a fan of art songs!”, claim The Erlkings. The quartet, led by singer-songwriter Bryan Benner, perform their own English-language arrangements of classic hits by Schubert & co. But how do they adjust their folk music style to the art song repertoire of the High Romantic? “We don’t. It’s all in there already. We just tailor it so it fits, based on height and girth.”

Alongside their “modern” versions of Schubert Lieder, The Erlkings’ new programme for MuTh includes selected Lieder by Ludwig van Beethoven. A belated serenade to mark his 250th birthday!

    Subscription ticket prices: Band A €54.60 / B €49 / C €40.60; box seats €68.60; MuTh Club Student, children and young people: A €28 / B €21 / C €12.60

  • The Great European Songbook: Swiss jazz musician Mathias Rüegg and Lia Pale, the songstress from Wels, breathe fresh life into the classic art song repertoire. For a number of years they have been bringing a jazz twist to Lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Handel. And along the way they have created something completely new: modern jazz songs which are every bit the equal of much-loved standards from the Great American Songbook, by the likes of George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter. The rüegg arrangements remain faithful to the originals both in structure and melody, but have been adapted to include many 20th century developments in harmony and rhythm. Despite the fact that these songs are based on art songs, Schubert remains Schubert, Schumann is still Schumann, Brahms still Brahms, and Handel still Handel.

    Subscription ticket prices: Band A €109.20 / B €98 / C €81.20; box seats €137.20; MuTh Club Student, children and young people: A €56 / B €42 / C €25.20

  • Focus on the Clarinet
Matthias Schorn in the MuTh / Daniel Ottensamer in the MuTh

    Matthias Schorn in the MuTh

Matthias Schorn, a solo clarinettist with the Vienna Philharmonic, is not only renowned for his virtuosity, but also for his genre-spanning projects. For his MuTh series, he has put together a programme of exquisite music. Matthias Schorn aims at one thing in particular: music for all tastes! Joining him will be fellow artists such as Julia Stemberger, Kirill Kobantchenko, David Seidel, Josef Reif and Christoph Gigler, as well as teachers and students from the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK).

    Daniel Ottensamer in the MuTh

The Vienna Philharmonic’s solo clarinettist, Daniel Ottensamer, comes to the MuTh to explore and showcase the vast range of musical styles available to the clarinet as only he can. Virtuosity is the order of the day as he pays tribute to Italian composer Giovanni Bottesini in the company of double bass player Ödön Rácz and soprano Romana Amerling, investigates the commonalities between classical and jazz with Gerald Preinfalk, and teases out the magical sound of the bassoon with Sophie Dervaux. On all three evenings, Ottensamer – and the audience of course! – will be in the more than capable hands of his long-term musical collaborator, Christoph Traxler, a virtuoso pianist of extraordinary touch and sensitivity.
