FERNBEZIEHUNG (LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP)

A delightful surprise awaits our audience in the third concert of our series, as we feature Johanna Beyer (1888-1944), an overlooked composer of experimental instrumental music. She was part of the American ultra-modernist movement alongside Henry Cowell and later connected with the New School group led by John Cage. Her music is strikingly concise and transparent, built on a strong conceptual foundation, and she is recognised as the first female composer to create an electro-acoustic work, aligning her with the contemporary composer Mark Fell. The evening will also spotlight a second composer, known to a completely different audience as a leading figure in electronic music. Following a successful workshop where we translated his process-driven musical structures into instrumental compositions, we are now ready to take the next step in our collaboration.

As a tantalising introduction, much like an amuse-gueule from the kitchen, we offer an ear-opening warm-up session to whet your appetite for the upcoming concert. In the hour leading up to each performance, we invite curious audience members to join us at the heart of the ensemble. Inspired by the wonderful Neapolitan tradition of caffè sospeso, where the buyer of a cup of coffee financially supports the cup of an unknown fellow customer in a gesture of solidarity, we present the Biglietto sospeso for the concerts in the YOU BETTER LISTEN! series.
