GUTE HIRTEN (THE GOOD SHEPHERDS)
Christmas with the Vienna Boys' Choir Family
Choral music | Vienna Boys' Choir | Concert | Children | Young people | Adults | Family
Shepherds play an important part in the Christmas story. They may have been just “simple folk”, but they were the first to hear of the birth of Jesus. Many songs tell their story: how they were lying in the fields when they saw the angel; how they were afraid at first, then overcame their fear; and how they made their way to the stable in Bethlehem, where they found the baby Jesus, and they rejoiced. The shepherds in the Bible represent all mankind. Each and everyone of us can and should identify with them.
The Good Shepherds have become a Christmas tradition here at MuTh. The Vienna Boys’ Choir join with you to celebrate as a family, singing all types of music. This year, together with Chorus Juventus and the Schubert-Akademie, the Vienna Boys’ Choir and their Girls’ Choir recreate the scene at the crib through music, singing the cantata “Uns ist ein Kind geboren” (Unto us a child is born), BWV 142. Although the piece was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, it is probably the work of his predecessor Johann Kuhnau (1660–1722).
And naturally, the audience can join in too: all those who want to can sing along with Handel’s famous “Hallelujah Chorus” and, of course, “Silent Night” – and turn a concert into a musical celebration for the whole family.
